                                              TRUE GRACE

“In times of suffering, silence is golden, and speaking is golden. It’s all a matter of truth and timing and tone.”.... John Piper

My Dad used to say it another way, "if you're going to say something in the midst of a storm, make it count..otherwise shut up."  He was great at the "truth" and the "timing" part of the above statement.

As the Father of a 12 year old girls, “what if?” in every conceivable form has probably crossed the minds of every parent in this Country in the aftermath of the Newtown shootings. I cannot possibly imagine how those parents are feeling.  I sit here and think about what I'm getting the girls for Christmas, while parents in Newtown are ordering caskets. It's not fair.

While watching the news conference of Robbie Parker's on CNN I truly marveled at his incredible strength and grace.  Thirty hours earlier he had learned that his 6 year old Daughter was dead, and there he was, a picture of courage , talking about his Daughter.  In closing (the video below doesn't capture this moment), he stated that his life mission is to be the best father he can possibly be to Emilie's younger Sisters, and to help as many people as he possibly can. There was no hint of anger in his tone.  I truly admire that man. I don't think I could have been that graceful...he even showed compassion for the shooter's family.  He sure has made me think about the tone I use when relatively meaningless events occur in my life every day.  It would be nice if something good could possibly come from this unimaginable event. For me, I will do my best to think about this man's grace when faced with my relatively insignificant bag of crap, and hopefully simply be a better human being.
Truth, timing and tone exemplified.  God Bless him, his family and all the other families in Newtown whose lives have been changed forever.

ALOHA

Yep... after flying for 14 hours to get to Hawaii while in pain, I get back to the hotel, and snap this picture of my tooth. There is NOTHING like starting the vacation off with an abscess.

Although there is an upside to this pain. I get to avoid the unending torture of having to spend too much time with my Mother-In-Law.
"Are you OK Dave? "....answer... "..i'm a little tired Janice..I'm going to just go sit on the beach by myself. Let me know what time dinner is..Thanks"   That conversation will take place every single day.

Thank God my man Dr J called in a prescription for painkillers/anti-biotics. The flight back is going to be LOVELY.

10 x 500 mtr row was painful.

I need to make one blanket statement after watching some of the  Outlaw Open on a live stream. If the words "shit just got real" ever escaped your lips, then you are a big douchebag.

Her name is Vika Yermolyeva. Her Wikipedia HERE page mentions that she won 6 international piano competitions. Here is a sampling of her skills. It starts to get REALLy good after the 2:30 mark. Unreal.

Toxicity.

I might have mentioned to Sarah that I would leave her for whoever this girl is. I think she understands, much like I understand when she tells me she would leave me for this dude.

I was offered a ticket to this Concert. I said "no thanks" as I was still a little depressed and just wanted to be home with the girls (they were 16 months old..my God)

This playoff season has gotten me in a tizzy. Let me start out by saying I am a HUGE Lebron James fan. Last night he delivered a performance for the ages and gave the haters a big cup of shut the fuck up. The criticism he receives day in and day out, while being the best player in the league is one of the most bizarre things I've ever witnessed. It really fires me up as I feel like the people who make these ridiculous statements like "he's not clutch" or "he doesn't show up in the big games" don't know wtf they are talking about. To be clear, the reason for writing this today is NOT because Lebron went off last night.

This morning, I'm listening to a sports talk radio station and a caller from Pound ridge NY (a lavish suburb in Westchester County where a lot of soft white kids live) called in and was dismayed that Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett didn't bring their same intenisty to last nights game..that they folded. So the morons appear to have something equally as stupid to say as the ridiculous Lebron bashing we have heard time and time again,  proving again my insistence that most fans should just watch and enjoy these incredible athletes play the game, and then just shut up.    Right...KG didn't bring his intensity...because it can't be that they just missed a bunch of shots because that's just what sometimes happens in sports....no...it has to be something deeper than that..always. Ridiculous.   Do any of these people realize that guys like KG and Pierce (and almost ANYBODY in the NBA) is more mentally tough, more driven, more intense than ANY of us could ever dream of being? How do you think they got so far?  Most of them grew up in situations that we couldn't even fathom...but there is something in all of them that made them get to this point, and it's something that most of us simply don't possess. It's always amusing to me when some soft white dude gets to call in or blog from the comfort of his fortunate existence, and comment on whether or not these guys are "soft" or "not clutch", when the fact is if you placed any of these people in any of these high pressure situations, they would all shit in their pants...i know i would. I have played basketball games in front of a  thousand people and almost threw up on myself. I don't say that to illustrate that I was once able to walk and chew gum at the same time...I swear. I truly want to point out that I know for a FACT that I couldn't handle what these guys go through. I felt PRESSURE, and nobody was even watching!!!!   Multiply that by about 10,000 and we get the idea of what these guys face....and then multiply it by another 50 and get the idea of what the stars face every night. Lebron faces this to a greater degree than any athlete on the planet, and seems to handle it pretty well...and at the very least, he handles it to a degree that should earn the SOFT WHITE GUY IN HIS LIVING ROOM's respect. They live in a world we couldn't even fathom...it's time for the fans, Chris Broussard, Michael Wilbon, Stephen A Smith and Skip Bayless to just shut the fuck up.

One more thing....here is a piece about Paul Pierce about his stabbing incident in 2000...

"On September 25, 2000, Pierce was stabbed 11 times in the face, neck, and back and had a bottle smashed over his head while at the Buzz Club, a late night dance club in Boston's theatre district. He had to undergo lung surgery to repair the damage.[27][28]Nevertheless, Pierce was the only Celtic to start all 82 games in the 2000–01 season. Also, witnesses say that Pierce was attempting to separate the fighters when he was stabbed."

And some white dude from Pound Ridge called this morning saying Pierce didn't rise to the moment..... this shit cracks me up. The guy got stabbed 11 times and didn't miss a game. Whoever that kid is that called in should have a bottle smashed over his head, and then have to compete against the best players on the planet....funny stuff.

                                            GAY MARRIAGE

My thoughts on gay marriage can pretty much be summed up by the great Mike Caracciolo, aka "The Kid From Brooklyn".  I really love this guy.

Case closed.

                                        ENTITLEMENT NATION

We are a nation of spoiled fucking brats. I completely get why politicians have no interest in addressing the entitlement bomb that is about to explode on the USA.  Once you give a little something extra to somebody, good luck trying to take it back. We are a pathetic species in that way.

BOTH OF MY DAUGHTERS ARE 52K IN DEBT..AND SO ARE OF YOUR KIDS!!!!!
As you may have heard, Senate Democrats haven't bothered to present a budget in more than 1,000 days and counting -- which, unlike many pundits, I don't find particularly upsetting, considering we've been free of a new Democratic budget for 1,000-plus days and counting.
A couple of weeks ago, though, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., offered up the House's budget outline, which -- whether misguided, genius, flawed or whatever you might think of it -- is a pretty earnest reflection of the concerns of about half the country. The primitive half. So the White House -- where rational, enlightened grown-ups are represented -- responded like so:
"The House budget once again fails the test of balance, fairness, and shared responsibility. It would shower the wealthiest few Americans with an average tax cut of at least $150,000, while preserving taxpayer giveaways to oil companies and breaks for Wall Street hedge fund managers." It's a waste of time to point out how little of the above statement is true, because no matter what the topic is or how critical the consequences are, the White House is going to claim Daddy Warbucks isn't pulling his weight. It polls well.
Oh, and oil companies and hedge fund managers. The axis of evil.
Now, you may wonder, what on earth does block granting Medicare have to do with the biggest financial crisis of our lifetimes? What does a plan that allows seniors -- 10 years from now -- to use Medicare dollars in private plans or stick with the traditional government-run system have anything to do with a recession? How does reforming the tax code induce housing prices to bubble retroactively? What does altering the destructive trajectory of deficit spending have to do with fairness?
Nothing, of course.
The administration isn't serious about the debt, because like most politicians, Barack Obama doesn't care. Not one bit.  Democrats are willing to move heaven and earth for the things they do care about. They were prepared to whip up political turmoil and put the presidency and Congress on the line to pass Obamacare. Yet they won't risk offering a budget, lest anyone glimpse their priorities. And we could tax all the millionaires into poverty, and it wouldn't make a dent without reforming spending.
No, of course, you can't blame any single administration or person for the array of decisions and autopilot spending that has put us on this course -- but we can name the star performers.
The president once claimed that "others" (w)wanted to kick "the can down the road." Well, the national debt has increased more during President Obama's three years of judicious rule than it did during eight years of a reckless George W. Bush. Whereas, in the video previously posted,  Obama rightly claimed that Bush deficits were "irresponsible" and even "unpatriotic," his latest budget projected a deficit of about $1.3 trillion, followed by a $901 billion deficit and then ones remaining in the hundreds of billions for 10 years after that -- or until some new emergency needs additional spending.
Don't get me wrong; the Ryan budget isn't perfect. After all, it's brimming with superb non-starters, such as the repeals of Dodd-Frank and Obamacare and the complete privatization of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. And it must also be pointed out that for many Republicans, fretting about debt is a newfound passion. Even today, Ryan's budget doesn't take on Social Security....something I just don't get.  The GOP won't go for real cuts in defense spending.  So there is plenty of blame to go around.
But these days, we can see how utterly unserious Democrats are about the deficit and debt. They've offered no real plan. They're not even pretending anymore. Oh, I'm sorry..Obama's latest budget was put to a vote in the House. It got voted down 414-0!!!  Some plan...he couldn't get a single vote from his own party.

I was poking around on YouTube and discovered an incredible talent (Sungha Jung---I'll post some of his stuff soon), but I also came across this very moving video.

The video speaks for itself. I was moved and hope this kid lives a great life...he seems deserving after all he has been through. But something about it struck me as another sign that the Apocalypse is upon us.

I noticed the video received 4494 "dislikes". How the fuck can a human being dislike this video? What a bunch of soulless piles of garbage who inhabit this planet with us.

The greatest duet ever. Billy Preston (the 5th Beatle) and Syreeta Wright (Stevie Wonder's 1st Wife and owner of the purest voice I've  heard this side of Eva Cassidy) make history. John Legend and Mariah tried to duplicate this, and failed miserably. The song was recently played on an episode of "Glee", but once again, this one is best just left alone ot the two originals.

this is what one might call an intellectual mismatch. I'm not a big fan of Piers, but he schooled this tool named "Toure"

                                           MSNBC MORONS PART 2

Lawrence O’Donnell, Ed Schultz, Rachel Maddow, etc...are desperately trying to have it both ways.
On the one hand, they want it to be the case that George Zimmerman’s shooting of Trayvon Martin was unlawful, so that they can blame the authorities for not arresting and prosecuting him.

On the other hand, they want it to be the case that the shooting was lawful, so they can blame a law (stand your ground) written by Jeb Bush... for allowing the shooting. Of course this begs the question, "Is there any ill in the world that MSNBC won't blame on a member of the Bush family?"
So the establishment lapdogs at MSNBC are once again inconsistent; no surprise there. But which way should they resolve this inconsistency?

Well, here’s the actual text of the stand-your-ground provision, which actually seems pretty reasonable to me:
A person who is not engaged in an unlawful activity and who is attacked in any other place where he or she has a right to be has no duty to retreat and has the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force if he or she reasonably believes it is necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself or herself or another or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony.
(Read the entire law here, including some not-so-nice bits, such as the 14th-Amendment-violating exception concerning self-defense against police officers and please explain how this law is a problem...or applicable in this case)
So unless Zimmerman a) was attacked by Martin, and b) had a reasonable belief that Martin posed a serious danger to him (two conditions that, from the evidence thus far available, do not appear to have been met – and certainly the critics clearly do not believe either condition was met), the stand-your-ground provision offers no defense of his actions.
Of course it is entirely possible that local Florida authorities have been misapplying this law, and indeed that they MAY have been doing so with racist motivations. That wouldn’t exactly shock me. But in that case, the problem lies not with the stand-your-ground law but with the authorities. Either way, it has nothing to do with this law.
It also has nothing to do with politics. It's fucking amazing how every newsworthy incident becomes a political football. Why is our President weighing in on this story? His inconsistency is a topic for another post, but I'll leave with with this thought. In November of 2009, after Nidal Hasan decided to go batshit, killing 13 and wounding 29 soldiers at Ft Hood...while screaming "ALLAHU AKBAR!!!", Obama cautioned us "...we shouldn't be so quick to judge".  Interesting.

                                                HEAD MORON AT MSNBC

The commercial seems like a parody, but that sure looks like Lawrence O’Donnell of MSNBC’s “Last Word.” In the spot O’Donnell mocks politicians who say that “government can’t create jobs.”
“The government created your job!” O’Donnell fires back, smiling triumphantly.
Imagine: In a battle of wits with a phantom politician, O’Donnell lost. Of course he doesn’t know it.
On the off-chance this is not a “Saturday Night Live” bit, let’s take a closer look.
First—I don’t even know where to start—it’s so ridiculous. How about this? The claim that government can’t create real jobs is not refuted by the existence of politicians. Must that really be explained?
Perhaps O’Donnell would applaud a proposal to make every adult American a member of Congress, paid a salary drawn on the Federal Reserve. Unemployment would vanish overnight.
But maybe that wouldn’t satisfy him. He might want at least some people working to make useful things. What do politicians make? Besides messes, that is.
But what things? Here’s where it gets tricky. Alas we live in a world of scarcity. People making widgets can’t also be making wudgets (a similar but not identical product). Should the government create widget-making jobs or wudget-making jobs? Neither? Some of each? How many? And how would the program administrators even go about making the decision?
In a freed market a process exists for answering those questions. Prices generated by free consumer purchases and producer competition for inputs guide decisions about what to make, how to make it, and in what quantities. In contrast, government “job creation” is like flying in a heavy fog without instruments: Prices are absent.
It has to be said yet again: In economic terms a “job” is not mere physical or mental exertion for which one gets paid. As someone once put it, “A thing cannot have value, if it is not a useful article. If it is not useful, then the labor it contains is also useless, does not count as labor, and hence does not create value”  Think POLITICIANS!!!!
Karl Marx said that. Yes, Mr. O’Donnell, Karl Marx understood that exertion aimed at making things no one wants is not real labor. When I say “things no one wants,” I don’t mean intrinsically useless things. In a world of scarcity, if we consumers believe we have enough widgets but not enough wudgets, then efforts to produce more widgets at the cost of wudgets are counterproductive no?  Inputs are transformed into things we want less badly (if at all) than other things those inputs could have been transformed into. Value is destroyed when it could have been created.
Admittedly it is technically wrong to say, “Government cannot create jobs.” We must concede there is some SLIM chance that a government program could finance a project that would have been undertaken in the freed market. But it would be pure luck, and we couldn’t know for sure it had happened even after the fact because government, which procures its resources at the point of a gun and doesn’t have to offer its “services” to consumers free to say no, faces no market test.
Persistent high unemployment does not demonstrate a need for government to create jobs. On the contrary, it demonstrates a need for government to get out of the way so the market process can undergo the correction called for by the earlier government-induced boom, which itself was an unsustainable jobs-creation program. Politicians (read--Liberals) aggravate an already bad situation when they generate a tax and regulatory environment in which anything can happen.
Obamacare vs the Supreme Ct is on deck.

                                                     THE MANDATE

To recap, under Obamacare all employers will be required to arrange for “health insurance” for their employees. Coverage MUST include various disease-preventive health services and women’s contraception at no charge. No premium-sharing, no copays, no deductibles – nothing.
The Department of Health and Human Services, which has ominous rule-making power under Obamacare, exempted Catholic churches (as employers) from this rule because Catholicism teaches that contraception is sinful. However, HHS did not exempt Catholic institutions whose mission (the government says) extends beyond religion, namely, colleges, hospitals, and charities. Those institutions would have to pay (nominally at least) for their women employees’ birth-control products and services.
This led to Ms Fluke's testimony on Capitol Hill where she..well...whined that her University (Georgetown..a Jesuit University which might be exempt from this ridiculous mandate) will not cover her birth control. Watching her testify I couldn't help but wonder....do I say it?.....should I go there?.....ok..I honestly did question what guy on this planet would..ya know...make her need birth control.   Enter Rush Limbaugh who calls her a slut and it's ON!!!!!!

Of course through all the phony outrage (where was this outrage when Bill Maher called Sarah Palin a "dumb twat"? CLICK HERE if you'd like to hear the response to that attack)  the core issue of the debate has been lost in all the hyperbole of a news media which is, at best. unreliable in delivering the news.

One of the most ridiculous arguments I've heard from the Libtards is the idea that Insurance companies always prefer to cover contraception above maternity costs and/ or the costs of medical complications from pregnancy, miscarriage, or abortion, as contraception is much, much cheaper than the alternatives. The insinuation being that insurance companies allegedly would save money because they wouldn’t have to pay for medical services associated with having children. That makes the false assumption that if the insurer were not providing free contraception, women would have to do without. Target charges less than $15 /month for the pill for those who aren't covered. Seems like an easy solution. If one dared to claim that the cost is still prohibitive, one may properly ask how that could justify forcing others to pay? Also, if we accept that the insurance companies make the calculation re: costs for pregnancies vs paying for contraception, isn't it fair to ask if the individual might make that same calculation?

It’s amusing to watch advocates of free contraception cite, as evidence for their position, polls showing that women overwhelmingly support no-cost contraception. Since when have people not wanted free stuff? I think I just saw a poll showing that men overwhelmingly are in favor of a free trip to the playboy mansion. Duh.

Women have managed to obtain birth control up until now (we’re repeatedly told that nearly all women, including Catholics, have used it), and low-income women can resort to Planned Parenthood if necessary, which already gets TAXpayer money (which is not to say it should). Speaking of TAX payer money...as i read in NRO 2 weeks ago "... any man in need of free condoms only needs to download the free “NYC Condom” app to their  iPhone, BlackBerry, or Android smartphones and have its GPS service direct them to the nearest provider of free contraception with devastating accuracy. Never has a society been so precisely and easily led to safe sex. (One might well ask whether someone who can afford a smartphone and its monthly bills is genuinely in need of an app that locates “free” — i.e., paid for by taxpayers — condoms, but then this is 21st-century America, and New York’s mayor is Michael
Bloomberg, so such small questions are unavoidably consumed by bigger ones. BTW...The NYC Condom program’s not-so-subtle slogan is “Grab a handful and go,” .""..paid for by the taxpayers of NYC.

Now onto the nature of insurance itself.......

Insurance arose as a way for individuals to pool their risk of some low-probability/high-cost misfortune occuring in their lives. Car insurance, life insurance, home insurance , flood insurance all have similar characteristics. The purchaser of those products basically pay a premium...a losing bet for the most part...in exchange for a good nights sleep.  Health insurance has turned into something else altogether over the decades and IMO Obamacare takes us further down the wrong road. What I heard from Ms Fluke's testimony was somebody who wanted more service than she was willing to pay for. She's not a "slut"...she's an entitled Libtard.  So who pays for it? More on that below.

It shouldn’t be necessary to point this out, but coming of child-bearing age and choosing to use contraception is not an insurable event. It’s a volitional act...a choice.  It may have positive consequences for the person taking the action and society at large, but it is still a volitional act. It makes no sense to talk about insuring against the eventuality that a particular person will use contraception. Strictly speaking, contraception has nothing to do with insurance. (Neither does Viagra ...the idea that my premiums are higher than they need to be because some men can't get a fucking erection is offensive to me)

Unfortunately, we don’t speak strictly about health insurance. One reason we don’t is the tax code.  Compensation for labor in the form of employment-based health insurance does not count as taxable income. (Money spent independently on health insurance does count.) The tax code thus creates perverse incentives to 1) depend on one’s employer for medical insurance, 2) shift income from liquid cash to restricted insurance benefits, and 3) define uninsurable events as insurable. Would someone care to explain how well-baby care can be insurable? So we have taxation to thank for yet another feature of the modern world: the corruption of language. In the medical realm "insurance" no long means insurance.

Instead it’s a game by which we get other people to pay for stuff. Well, that’s not quite accurate. It’s actually a game in which we pretend that other people pay for stuff. Contraception, mammograms, colonoscopies, and well-baby care are not free. They require labor and resources for which the owners wish – not unreasonably — to be compensated. Someone HAS to pay. If employers are compelled nominally to pay for the coverage, does anyone seriously doubt that employees will actually pay through lower cash wages?  Employers are not charities. So even without a copayment, we all know deep down that we as workers pay for the coverage.  (Which by the way is likely to be more expensive than the services would be in a freed market, since insurance companies will charge overhead and more for their trouble. Also subsidized demand raises prices...if you disagree with that point, you haven't been paying attention to the relationship between Sallie Mae and rising tuition rates) Nevertheless, the truth is so obscured that people can pretend they’re getting something for free.

So the government-generated system treats us like children, and alas most of us seem happy to be treated that way. What a pity. You might be able to imagine how I feel about entitlements.

It was great to see Al Sharpton on "Meet The Press" yesterday to lecture everybody about civility. Maybe I can do an entire post about how is civil disobedience caused the death of two young adults in Crown Heights, Brooklyn in the early 90's. That incident on top of his criminal behavior during the Tawana Brawly fiasco should eliminate him from being involved in any civil discussion anywhere on this planet...but no...he has his own MSNBC show and gets to spew his nonsense every night. It was disappointing to see him on "Meet The Press" and go completely unchallenged about his past by any of the others on the panel. Peggy Noonan needed to step up in that spot, and failed.

The phony outrage the Left has shown regarding Rush's comments is transparently inconsistent given the misogynistic statements made in the recent past by Bill Maher (called Sarah Palin a "dumb twat" while a guest on his show said about Michelle Bachman .."I just hope that Marcus Bachman (Michelle's husband) fucks her angrily, because that's how I would."  Louis CK makes derogatory remarks about Sarah Palin, and even worse, Sarah Palin's child who has downs syndrome, and we NEVER HEAR A FUCKING PEEP!!!!  Let me be clear...I don't care what ANY of these people say about anybody. They are entertainers, and saying crude and rude shit gets ratings. Same with Rush....but if you are truly outraged by what Rush said, you HAVE to be outraged by these other comments....or you have to ignore it all. Can't have it both ways.

Of course all of this phony outrage obfuscates the fact that there are real issues that are NOT being discussed. Why would the left want to discuss a Country going broke, $5 gasoline, 9% unemployment, a War in Afghanistan that is still not going well, Iran's nuclear ambitions etc....?  Why discuss any of that when we can pretend to be offended by a stupid comment that Rush Limbaugh made last week?

"Jessie is a friend,
Yeah, I know he's been
A good friend of mine
But lately something's changed
That ain't hard to define
Jessie's got himself a girl
And I want to make her mine"

Uh oh. Rick Springfield has a problem. His boy is dating a girl he wants to bang. What to do?

Couple of thoughts came to mind when watching this.

1) Does anybody know a guy named "Jessie"?  Why did that name go out of style. In fact, if I ever had a Son that name has just gone to the top of the list.. "Jessie Hochberg"...i only hope he ends up with a girl that his best friend wants.

2) Why did Jessie spray paint "Jessie's Girl" on that brick wall?

3) At 1:05 you see Rick in his suit with some white sneakers. It's fucking astounding that in the 80's that look was totally OK.

4) So Rick just can't understand why Jesse's girl doesn't dig him. The 1:50-2:10 mark is really creepy. Rick washes his face...and I'll quote .."And I'm lookin' in the mirror all the time,
Wondering what she don't see in me.."  He then proceeds to break the mirror with the neck of his guitar. I wish there was some more footage of Jesse's girl in the video to really analyze if she was worth all of this. She looked cute, but not worthy of shattering your bathroom mirror with the one thing that actually will get Rick laid--his guitar.

5) The guitar solo that follows is pretty good...I was surprised.

Anyway, I wish there was a sequel to this video. In the real world it could have gone one of two ways.

A) Rick ends up meeting Jesse's girl's Sister, who is even hotter and Jesse gets all pissy about this. A fight ensues where Jessie hits Rick Springfield over the head with his guitar while the Sisters realize that these two dudes are both insane. Everybody ends up single and miserable.

B) Rick ends up with Jessie's girl,  and then finds out what every man ends up finding out about a woman he lusts after...namely..she's not worth it. He ends up miserable.

The moral of the story seems obvious.

1987

My #1 guy (no homo) reminded me of an unforgettable video from 1987. This gave me a little time to reflect on that time in my life. The Mets had just won the World Series in Oct '86 and Dwight Gooden and Daryl Strawberry seemed like sure-fire Hall of Famers. As 1987 began I was entering my last semester of College (I tried to get back for a 6th year but the old man had had enough) and the music scene was pretty solid. SO it's safe to say that 1987 was the peak of Daryl's, Dwight's and my life...but we are not alone. U2 released the Joshua tree in March of 1987. I remember this clearly because my girlfriend at the time, Lisa, while listening to "With or Without You" asked me a weird question..."Is this Neil Diamond?"  I would suppose that in staying with the theme of this post, the peak of my relationship with Lisa was about 1 second before she asked that question....all downhill from there. Whitney releases her 2nd album which included "I Wanna Dance With Somebody", "Didn't We Almost Have It All", and "So Emotional"...Whitney peaked a couple of years later with THIS RENDITION of the "Star Spangled Banner". Guns and Roses released "Appetite for Destruction", Michael released "Bad" which included his greatest song "Man in The Mirror", George Michael released "Faith" in the Fall....and I remember this clearly as I went back to college for a visit of my #1 guy, who brilliantly decided he needed a 5th year of schooling as well, and the song "Faith" came on at the Cash In  and all hell broke loose. Well, things have changed quite a bit since 1987...some of the people mentioned above are dead, some have been checked into rehab, and others are just a little more on edge (me) than they were then. In the meantime there was one un-fucking-forgettable video that may be the absolute epitome of this theme. David Coverdale, lead singer of Whitesnake, wrote a song in 1982 that didn't quite catch on at the time, but David Coverdale is no dummy. He started dating Tawny Kitaen in 1987, who at the time might have been the hottest girl on the planet.  So David, being no dummy, had an idea. He must have thought that tune he wrote in 1982 didn't get a fair shake, and he knew putting his hot girlfriend in a video might get it noticed, and also serve the duty that every guy kind of wishes for...to know that he has the girl that every guy in the world wants to bang. Anyway, it was a wild success as he achieved both of his goals.   Let's watch this

The split on the hood of the car at the 1:00 mark was just the beginning. the tongue in the ear at 1:38 wasn't bad either....too many great images to even mention so let's skip to the end. The 4:25 mark is clearly the peak of this video, and of both of their careers. Firstly, as a voyeur, witnessing David Coverdale getting dragged into the backseat by this woman so she can have her way with him,  is the stuff that dreams are made of....but upon viewing that part of the video again, I could swear that David C was STILL driving that car...which could mean that the car crashed a couple of seconds later...and with it their careers. Fast forward a couple of years and this beautiful woman is married and divorced to David C, she then in 1997 marries professional baseball player Chuck Finley, but they divorce after SHE was charged with domestic violence. Yes, she kicked HIS ass. I wonder how that went over in the clubhouse for Chuck. Nov of 2006 she is charged with possessing 15 grams of cocaine...years later ends up on Celebrity rehab, and unfortunately looks like absolute shit. Please google a recent picture of her as I don't know how to post one...but it's really disheartening.

Anyway, 1987 was a great great year....

This performance of "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" is considered one of the great moments in Grammy history. I'm not sure why, but it could be that there's nothing funnier than watching two ugly Jews (I have license to say that being a Jew myself) trying to figure out why the romance has faded. In Barbara's case, it speaks to her utter narcissism that she doesn't understand why she doesn't get flowers anymore. Who would bring this woman flowers? This clip was from 1980...i would imagine that Barbara's flower receiving days have come and gone.

The song itself is a pretty good song I suppose, although it seems pathetic listening to Neil Diamond sing to Barbara at the 1:58 mark that she assisted with his learning "...how to laugh, and I learned how to cry." If it took Barbara to help you "learn how to laugh", you are one unamusing little fellow,  Neil. But Barbara's response is both pathetic, and a bit of a dig at her lover "I learned how to love, I even learned how to lie".  Basically, she didn't even KNOW how to lie before she met this dude. Interesting...not often you hear a real insult in a song like this.

OK--I just watched it again. Barbara sings at the 1:10 mark that after a moment of intimacy Neil wanted to go to bed. "...well you just rolled over and turned out the light." WTF is her problem?  Would you want the lights ON when hanging out with a naked Barbara Steisand? Why were the fucking lights on to begin with? Very poor planning on Neil's part.

The Jeremy Lin of Music

Javier won the voice last season, but this is a video of him warming up for Joss Stone in 2007. I guess judging talent is tough, but after watching this performance it's hard to believe it took another 4 years for him to break through.

So I've been seeing a lot of this poster the past couple of days.

I'm not sure what the creator of this poster was going for, and I have NO doubt that it was well-intentioned, but I think it's off base for a couple of reasons. First the simple facts....

A) "Witney" is spelled "Whitney"

B) Whitney is not "famous for going into rehab", rather, she is famous for having one of the greatest voices of our or any generation.

Now as it pertains to the media ....

The problem with the media (in my opinion) is not that they are covering the death ...of one of the most iconic singers of  any generation, rather the way they covered her drug abuse for the past 10-15 years. When people with that much God-given ability die too early, it's heartbreaking. ...it gets coverage...and it should I suppose, and it always will. I simply don't equate Whitney's talent/reason for being famous the same way I view the Kardashians..or Chris Brown for that matter. It seems to be a relevant distinction in this case.
The great thing about our real heroes is they go to battle with honor, not needing or wanting any fanfare. They are the true heroes indeed. Nobody would ever deny that they are more deserving of our praise and hopefully more cherished than ANY celebrity...Whitney, Michael Jackson, Michael Jordan etc.....

As it pertains the the media's irresponsible coverage of our heroes, it seems they are more willing to cover their deaths to make some kind of political point, rather than to honor them. I do recall for 7 straight years when W was President the running death tally in the nightly news. I don't see that anymore...hmmmmmm...I wonder why that is?  SO if this post is about how big of a disgrace the media is---I'm ALL IN!!!!

The end of civilization is a near certainty.

Click on THIS link and watch this little dickbag rap. It's such a nice thing to be Jewish so I have the freedom to call out this little spoiled Jew Boy. This kid's parents are making it an absolute certainty that this kid is going to be unbearable. I guess it's really not his fault.

I was NOT a big fan of the Occupy Wall St movement....but this helps me understand their anger.

This is the strangest video I've seen in the past 10 years, which probably has more do with the lyrics than any of the visuals. It's called "If Nobody Believed in You," by Joe Nichols.  There are a lot of heavy ideas in this clip: The first verse is about how you shouldn't scream at a small child for not swinging his bat on a 3-2 count, which seems like reasonable child-rearing advice. The second verse is about how it's morally wrong to stop an elderly parent from driving a car, which seems a little more questionable. Some old people shouldn't be driving. The lyric even states "..this time I'm gonna pass that test", clearly inferring that the old man has FAILED several driving tests. I woner how Joe Nichols would feel if that old man backed into his new Porsche.  But it's the third verse that really goes for the jugular; the third verse posits an  apocalyptic possibility that is both supernatural and specific. It suggests a worst-case scenario that I didn't even know was on the table. I totally didn't see it coming, but maybe that's my own fault.  Joe Nichols needs to lighten up.

I probably deal in absolutes more than I should, but this is the greatest song ever written, off of one of the greatest albums ever made....written by the greatest musical artist we will ever see.

If we can compare Stevie's musical artistry/virtuoisity to a CrossFitter, we'd be talking about a dude who can run a 4:00 mile, snatch 330lbs, do 150 consecutive pullups and walk on his hands across two football fields...maybe not the absolute BEST in the world at any one thing...but borderline elite at sooo many things. He wrote the music, wrote the lyrics, sang the songs, played the piano AND produced his music...all on a very high level.  Case closed.

ANOTHER REST DAY!!!! GO FIGURE

Day 5 of the cleanse. It's not that i'm actually hungry..I just miss the taste of food. This Madal Syrup/lemonny concoction is starting to taste like piss. (the term "piss" is what would be called a metaphor...a figure of speech not LITERALLY applicable...as I actually have no FUCKING idea what piss  tastes like). Anyway, after speaking to my Naturopath yesterday, he said i can have some very well cooked veggies and some Soup later, but no animal protein until Saturday. It's probably hard for him to imagine how badly I wanted to smack him, but being that my progesterone levels rival those of any women, I better listen to him before I start gettin' those bitch tits.

The most painful part of this was hearing DaveFranklin talk about his experience at HARD EIGHT BBQ. I am heading to Austin in March for the PALEO FX GET TOGETHER to get a greater understanding of diet/health etc... but I'm really only going so I can get to that BBQ joint.

Anywaysssssss...onto a video. I saw this one a couple of months ago I feel it's important to take another look.

Once again the video speaks for itself.  If by chance any of you want to try this dance at home, please don't forget to casually mix in the many variations of "smashing your head against your partners ASS" from time to time. Something about this video makes my nuts hurt..I can't figure it out.

Thanks to Rhino for sharing this with me. I'm not sure what it says when it seems to be OK that a fat old man in a plain white tee, with black shorts which are WAAAAYYYY too high above his knees, is simultaneously groping two women's crotches. It might be said that he is a fucking genius...probably getting paid to do this.  Either way...I just signed up for THIS COURSE.

OK---In case anybody noticed, I posted a negative review of the President's "State of the Union" last night, but removed it. This won't be the forum for political debate... This blog will be about my training and goofing on/admiring videos, entertainers, athletes etc.....in other words, it will be entirely about goofing on/admiring videos, entertainers, athletes etc...
In that vain, it's time to comment on the best scene in one of my favorite movies ever.. Jerry Maguire

I can't even imagine what it must have been like for Tom and Cuba to act out this scene...how many "takes' it took etc....but this is an 11 on a scale of 1-10.

:53 nah i air dry

1:24  "..wait, you're telling me to dance"

1:34-1:40 Was it? Was it? Clearly Rod tidwell was paid to play in pee wee football.

2:03  tom had to hurt his foot right there

2:28-2:43  Only Tom Cruise can pull that off...seriously ..who else could have pulled that off? Cameron Crow first offered this part to Tom Hanks (and cleptomaniac Winona Ryder as Dorothy Boyd) but there's NO WAY Tom Hanks pulls this off as well. Even Tom Hanks know THIS to be true.

Then Cuba takes it across the goal line.

Brilliant....

REST DAY

OK---I'm not really sleeping but I did just watch this video

The Captain is clearly high as a fucking kite, and Toni Tennille clearly lost a bet to somebody..the wager being if she loses she has to get one of those horrible Dorothy Hamill insipired haircuts. In the meantime, the real magic in this video occurs at the :58 mark when the two stars of this fiasco (Muskrat Suzie and Muskrat Sam) descend down  from the heavens and land, superimposed, on Toni's shoulders. Those are real people underneath those costumes!!! Bizarre. Throw in the Captains Funky synthesizer lick around the 2:10 mark, and you officially have possibly the worst live performance in the HISTORY of TV. The only thing I can remember which was more bizarre than this was Lionel Ritchie's SUPER CREEPY performance in his "HELLO" video.

He plays a teacher who is basically stalking a blind girl. WTF was he thinking when he cast himself as the creepy teacher? The video speaks for itself but the MOST bizarre part of this video occurs around the 3:43 mark.
The fact that this creepy teacher has his student's home phone number is kinda creepy. Calling her at night is even more creepy. Not saying anything, after the blind chick picks up the phone,  for 6 seconds is EVEN more creepy. Not identifying himself, but instead belting out "HELLO!!!! IS IT ME YOU"RE LOOKING FOR???!!!!!" is just too fucking much. I think he proceeds to put the phone in his pants...but i might be wrong.

Mr Tam Ba Li De se ne moiya.. hey..jambo jambo may have fooled my Wife (Sarah thinks Lionel is a God!!!), but I think there is ample evidence that he was a creepy assclown who had a sweet voice and wrote a couple of good tunes...oh yeah..all while looking a bit like THIS guy. I'm going back to sleep.
